Are You "Hanging in There" Today?

It just started out as a friendly conversation with a co-worker.

“How are you doing?”, I asked. To which he replied, “I’m hanging in there.”

He went on to say things have been up and down lately for he and his family. He and his family have been through some tough stuff but they were holding on and hoping it all would be over soon.

All of us face tough days in this life. We have some good friends who have had one of their three, young kids sick for the last several months and have been getting little rest. Another friend has been working 12 hour days, 6-7 days a week for the last month or so. And I have a dear friend in Tennessee who continues to have serious health challenges even after years of medical appointments and treatments. No one escapes the trials of this life.

After I left the conversation with my co-worker, I began to reflect on some tough days I have faced, everything from being on the brink of divorce in our marriage, to late night ER trips for a child with asthma, to being stranded on a vacation with a blown transmission. The list could go on and on. As I reflected these situations and on the statement “I’m hanging in there”, I realized those words had come across my lips many times during difficult times in my life.

Then my thought turned to Jesus. When He walked this Earth as the Son of God, did He ever have my attitude that I am “hanging in there”? I think the answer to that question is clear from how we see Him all over the Gospels, but particularly as He faced the ultimate test on the cross of Calvary. He faced every trial and hardship with full trust and obedience in His Father. And the truth is, He has given me the power to do the same. I have no excuses. Because the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to me in every moment of my life as a Christ-follower.

And then it happened. I call it a “God-moment”: when you have a thought and you know it was not yours, but one the Lord put into your mind at that moment. And here was that thought: “I am holding on to you, Glen. In the midst of you hanging on, never forget that I am holding on to you. Call on Me!”

How gracious of the Lord to remind me that He is holding on to me. I must renew my mind with the truth that the Lord is with me and helps me. In the midst of whatever trial or hardship I may be facing, I must resist the urge to just hang in there but instead call out to the Lord and hold on to Him for my security. I cry out believing by faith that He hears and responds in His great mercy and grace. Below are just two reminders from His Word:

“For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the One who helps you.” Isaiah 41:13

“I love the Lord, because He has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. Because He has inclined His ear to me, therefore I will call on Him as long as I live.” Psalm 116:1-2

When we were facing divorce in our marriage, the Lord stepped in and saved me and then our marriage. When we took our child to the ER for a severe asthma attack, He was riding in the ambulance with us and protected our child. When we were stranded with a broken transmission, He used another family that loaned us their van so we could make the vacation trip we had planned. I look back and see His track record of faithfulness, so why do I doubt when I face a new trial?

So what challenge or difficulty are you facing today? Will you trust the Lord in this situation and call out to Him for His great mercy and grace to help you through this time? Will you remember that He is holding on to you, and that, as a Christ-follower, no one can snatch you out of His Hand?

Lord, help me to trust you in the midst of the trials I face. Give me faith to not fear, knowing You are the One who helps me. Thank You for holding my right hand and inclining Your ear to hear me. I will call on You as long as I live! In the Name of Jesus.
