Forever, O Lord, Your Word is firmly fixed in the heavens. Your faithfulness endures to all generations; You have established the earth, and it stands fast. By Your appointment they stand this day, for all things are Your servants. If Your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. I will never forget Your precepts, for by them You have given me life. Psalm 119:89-93 Security. It's something we all desire as human beings. We want security from threats to our safety – so we thank God for those first-responders who help make that possible. We desire security in our financial situation – so we find wise advisors to help us be good stewards of our finances. And, of course, we desire security in our marriages – so we attend marriage classes and read books together so that we can grow in living out what God designed for husband and wife. But is there any “real security” in any of these things? Even the best police force in the world can't protect every citizen. In the same way, no financial advisor can give us a 100% guarantee about our financial assets. And even the married couple who is consistently investing in their marriage is not immune from attacks on their marriage – attacks both from the inside and the outside. So where can we find real security amidst the uncertainties of life this side of heaven? Can real security be found for us while we live on this Earth? The Psalmist tells us four things that I would suggest can be bedrocks for our security:
His Word: The Psalmist tells us that God's Word is “firmly fixed”. When I am looking for security in the shifting sands of my daily life, I need something that is firm and fixed. And God's Word is just that. But I also see that I have a responsibility in this. The Psalmist tells me that God's law is “my delight” and that we should “never forget Your precepts”. If the Word of God is going to help me be firmly fixed as I walk daily with the Lord, I must be spending more than occasional time in the Word. I must see the Word as essential to my soul as food and water is to my body.
His Faithfulness: When I need something that is sure and certain, the Psalmist reminds me that God's faithfulness “endures to all generations”. Did you catch that? Not just “some generations” but “all generations”. That is a great track record! In fact, God has never broken a promise from His Word. He is 100% faithful – and I need to remember thain the “busy-ness” of life.
His Power: I love the phrases the Psalmist uses related to the Lord's power: “You have established”, “stands fast”, “all things are Your servants”. These are not-so-subtle reminders to me that the Lord has the power to do whatever He pleases. And He uses His power to defend and shelter His children when needed. He also uses His power to finish the good work that He has started in us through the hard and scary things we face in our lives.
His Grace: They are just three small words – but they are important words: “given me life”. The Lord not only gave me physical life when He formed me in my mother's womb, but by His Great Grace, He has given me spiritual life, as I am born again into a relationship with Him. This is the ultimate security we have as Christ-followers. The same grace that brought me in relationship with the Father, through Jesus, will bring me to dwell with Him in eternity.
As you ponder these four bedrock truths from Psalm 119, I want to give you some final encouragement on finding real security: The ultimate security in life will only be found in your relationship with the Lord. Think for a moment; where in all of human history was man most secure? Was it not when Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden? Were they not in the most secure relationship possible when they walked with God? They had sweet fellowship with Him and God’s gracious provision was all around them. (1) Please take a few minutes to honestly evaluate where you are finding your security in this life. And if, like me, you tend to find it in places other than the Lord Almighty, then take a moment to repent and confess that right now. Then turn to Him and His Word as the only truly secure things we have! (1) Source: https://covenantkeepers.org/online-articles/47-general-marital-issues/343-building-security-in-your-marriage
